A Sin Starts With A Dream

I know this is early in the reading, but I found a really interesting connection at the beginning of Book V to a thought I have had many times before. When Eve has the dream in the Garden where she finds herself being led to the Tree of Knowledge, she finds herself troubled by it. She is then given assurance that it does not indicate the fixture and she moves on. But I had an interesting thought involving sin. Does it not, in some ways, start with a "dream". The sins we find ourselves in, whether they be little or small, all start with a spark from sin. That spark could almost be compared to a dream in that we sometimes disregard them, yet they can haunt us until they cloud our minds and lead us down wrong paths. The crazy thing is, sometimes these dreams can be shrouded in good intentions and proper thoughts. It shows our human inability to act in a righteous way apart from Christ.

  1. Interesting perspective! I also found this passage fascinating to consider in relation to our sinfulness. If I understood correctly, the dream that Eve had that would reflect the coming Fall to be experienced by Adam and Eve, was spurn from the whispers of Satan in Eve's ears as she slept. I am very intrigued by Milton's understanding of evil and why Humanity even receives the gift of grace (because there was a Deceiver involved in their disobedience). Not too sure what to do with this analysis but I believe it connects to your thoughts in someway...would be interesting to further make connections, possibly! (And try to avoid being a heretic;)

  2. So true! Sin appears alluring and desirable when in actuality it is ugly and causes pain and death. That is one of it's aspects that satan used to tempt us: he made it appear as though separation from God and his command was desirable! And while it may have been to him, certainly if he had directly stated that we would've turned away from the tree. Or would we? Great thought.
