Lift This Weight Off Of Me/I Think Therefore I Am

Lift The Weight Off Of Me

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance."

Wow. This essay was awesome. My first comment I made was about this before I really dug into the essay. I still hold to my opinion that this can be a lofty thought that takes away from true reality, but it is fun to explore nonetheless. This is quite a rebellious idea in my opinion, and I feel like Kant has a slight leaning against the establishment whether that be the church, government, or just society in general. He calls for an enlightenment to be reignited in man that opens us up to question everything until we have freed ourselves from guidance of others. This part stood out to me the most. I felt as though the ability to truly separate ourselves from others to form our ideas is impossible. How can we remove a vital part of reality and our existence, if we hope to gain a better understanding in it. I feel like the shifts we have due to others is more important to enlightenment of man than Kant would say.

I Think Therefore I Am (How Original, Ethan)

This First Meditation from Rene Descartes struck me in a personal way from the get go. When I read the first line, "First Meditation: On what can be called into doubt," I commended Descartes immediately. I feel as though something like this can be very beneficial to believers. When we express our doubts and bring them to God, we are more likely to not be lost in a sea of doubt like if we had kept it inside. I know the way Descartes came to the revelation of God was different than usual, but I still feel like we can learn a lot from him. I feel my favorite line from this is when Descartes speaks on the importance of remembrance. "It isn't enough merely to have noticed though; I must make an effort to remember." This is so true as believers, because we often allow our quick emotional experiences with God to take hold of us, only to forget the truth that is the grounds of those moment, and we run back towards our old devices and sins. I know this wasn't really about the full topic of his meditation, my mind just traveled off to this idea whilst reading. (Wow, I used whilst...)
