These poor people

In Chapter 4 of Candide, Pangloss tells the story of his misfortunes after Candide was kicked out of the castle. Then Candide raises this question to Pangloss about love, "But how can so beautiful a cause have produced so abominable an effect in your case?" Right here, he is speaking about love and how love did him wrong. This caught my attention because I am also reading Dante's Inferno, and love has created Hell in Dante's vision of it. Love is interesting when it is thought in such ways that Pangloss and Dante have described it. For both Dante and Pangloss, love creates unwanted consequences. For the sinners in Dante's Hell, they have a misdirected sense of love and that is why they are in Hell. For Pangloss, love has created an immense amount of suffering for him. Though, love is a good thing, it can be the creator of great sorrow and hurt.

I commented on Zelda's and Sophia's!

  1. Love always has to be differentiated from sexual passion... You can get an STD from someone you don't really love. Now, they can coexist and very well might have in Pangloss' case. But it wasn't love that drove him to get intimate with the girl, and it sure as heck wasn't love that earned him a disease.

Don't get me wrong, I fully agree that love can cause someone pain. *CoughJESUSCRUCIFIEDcough* I just don't think it's the culprit as far as Pangloss is concerned.

Unless I'm subconsciously a pervert interpreting his vague story WAY TOO FAR and the disease was just something viral. But when in doubt, assume Voltaire is being as disgusting as possible. Heaven knows he will.

  2. ^ Pangloss was suffering from Syphilis! In that time it was a lot worse and nastier, although it still is pretty nasty.
It's interesting how often the word "love" gets construed into things God never intended for it to be, don't you think? Or maybe it's not interesting, as it's the nature of sin to alter and misconstrue every holy thing. Pangloss calls sex "love" when he had nothing more than lust for this chambermaid. I haven't read Inferno but I can make an educated guess and say it wasn't love that got the demons thrown into hell- it was pride.
