" Trail will come unsought "
While warning Eve about hidden dangers in book IX lines 366, Adam says to Eve, "trial will come unsought". I really like this line and think it explains the book quite nicely. To me, it expresses the idea that we are all constantly being tested in our faith, especially in today's world. We may not always be aware of or wanting the challenge of temptation to be there, but nevertheless, we are day in and day out building or hurting our relationship with God through our actions.
Eve does not realize the consequences that will come by committing her horrid sin in eating the fruit, just as we can't always predict the outcome of situations when we fall into temptation and sin. That is why God gave us the commandments and the Bible to help guide us in a lifestyle that will help us stay true to him and our faith. By giving us these tools, we can hopefully avoid situations like Adam and Eve have put us into in the future. For we never really know when danger, or in this case Satan inside a serpent, is right around the corner.

So in this case, both Eve and Adam know nothing of what is to come? I'd like to say, they were warned on multiple occasions by God and his angels that temptations would come in the near future. So in their case, it would only be natural to pursue more info on the coming trials and tribulations. Who will tempt me? What will he/she/it tempt me with? When will I be tempted? You're right, it is why God gave us His commandments, but more than that He asks us to put our faith in Him. So if Adam and Eve were to truly heed His warnings and wishes, they'd stop looking for the signs of temptations and cling to God as a guide through the fire.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if Eve knew the consequences, would she have been more or less likely to fall to the temptations by the serpent? So many times as humans (with sin nature) we see sin and we understand the possible and certain consequences of the said sin, but we commit the sin anyway.
Side note, the fall didn't occur till Adam ate the fruit.
