"Let us walk on, nevertheless, reasoning as we go; and if I convince thee not thou shalt turn back. We are but a little way in the forest yet."

This is such an odd offer from the Devil. It's almost like he is just giving him an open way out of his deal with him. Although I feel like this is just false hope at best, because Satan would not just let someone who has put their life in his hands run free. I can see a real world application to this, in a situation where someone starts down a bad path, and lies to themselves that they can stop and give up what they are doing. It's usually not true and just a way to make yourself feel like you have some control over your life. Of course when it comes to sin, we need to trust in God. Don't be like Goodman Brown, he's not a good man. teehee

P.S. I commented on Faith's and Micheal's posts

  1. It's easy for a man who thinks he has a way out to ignore danger. The way I see it, Goodman Brown didn't think he was locked in on his deal with the devil, so he had no problems riding along with it until the last possible moment. Funny how this contrasts with Goethe's Satan, who wants a contract signed with blood...

  2. In a sense, any atheist that outright says there is no god, they are lying to themselves in order to create a reality where they are the god themselves. Obviously, the context is different, but the underlying meaning shows parallels. Lying to oneself gives the individual an unrealistic sense of control over the self. By someone simply saying they can quit eating honey buns on a daily basis anytime they want, it gives them a false sense of security that they control their eating habits when in reality they are 500Ibs with diabetes (sad truths are sad).
