Assertion vs Faith

"And in this, it seems to me, lies the peculiar danger, the endemic evil, of theological utterance. Take such utterances as 'God has a plan,' 'God created the world,' 'God loves us as a father loves his children.' They look at first sight very much like assertions, vast cosmological assertions. Of course, this is no sure sign that they either are, or are intended to be, assertions. But let us confine ourselves to the cases where those who utter such intended them to express assertions."

Upon first reading this statement, I couldn't help but be a little bit offended at what was being said about the "endemic evil, of theological utterance" that I call my faith. But reading it a couple of times I have decided, I agree with the point being made. Flew says that theological utterances cannot be strictly an assertion. This is indeed true. Faith is just that which the word communicates- "..the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1) Belief in God's nature and existence can be deduced logically to an extent, but eventually, you arrive at faith, and there is a choice to share in faith or reject it. The beauty of the Gospel!
