[SPOILERS?] Silence
I'm not sure how much we were suppose to read, exactly, but I just played it safe and finished the book. Warning for SPOILERS if you haven't finished the book already.
This is mainly just gonna be my thoughts about Kichijiro because DANG...this book took me for a wild ride and I loved it. Easily my favorite read of the semester (glad it held up to my expectations).
But Kichijiro's character astonished me a lot, to be entirely honest. What a pitiful, small man. Back when he first showed up I kind of expected him to change, to prove he was a (devout) Christian in some way. But no, this man just HAS to continuously reject and reject.
This is just from the reading since thursday, but the fact he sold out Rodrigues?? Like, he claims it wasn't for the coin, but it kinda was. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Except Kichijiro, I think. Regardless he continues to come to Rodrigues again and again in hopes of having his confessions heard, when that's now how Christianity works. It's stated that, since broken off with the inquisition, Christianity has changed, so perhaps that's one of the ways it has changed for Kichijiro? It's well known to us (or at least I hope it is) that you're not supposed to sin in full knowledge of sinning because you know God will forgive you. That's just not how it works. But to Kichijiro, it apparently is exactly how it works considering he betrays the Padres like...three? Four times?
I know what I'm rereading over the summer ;)
I commented on Natalie and Noah's posts.
(Edit: I saw Noah's post is actually from before the break, oops! Commented on Will's also.)

Kichijiro makes it very easy for us to hate him. Perfect example of a modern day hypocritical christian that relies on the practices of religion rather than the saving faith of Christ which calls us to the ultimate sacrifice of our lives.
