Honest to God
I honestly never really thought to challenge that old mindset of "Heaven is directly in the clouds." But then again, I haven't really thought of it like that since I was really little. Now I see it more of just another world entirely that's separate from our own and cannot be accessed by physical means of the earth. Still technically "up there" but not really, if that makes much sense.
This quote right in the first part of the book really struck a chord "But now it seems there is no room for him, not merely in the inn, but in the entire universe:" Mainly because it's so heavily true for the world today. Issues with people not wanting to attend church because it's out of the way and they have no room for it. It's a good parallel on the author's part to reflect it back to Jesus' birth.
Just for the sake of jumping to a different topic to end this post on, I do appreciate the fact that Robinson's main and driving goal with this is to push us back to reexamine the Bible for ourselves, and not always follow what others might say. It's something I need to really tackle into sometime, but just haven't yet.

So much of what bible belt believers (bbb's) believe is just passed down tradition as opposed to rooted in the word of God! That is exactly what he challenges the reader to do. Also, I've heard the thing about heaven described as being in another dimension, since no where in the universe can we fly a space ship to heaven's location, Heaven must at least exist in a different dimension. (Means there are more than one!!!)
ReplyDeleteThat phrase really struck me as well. It was one of my a ha moments because I thought to myself "Oh my gosh this is literally the world I live in today!" The world pushes Christ out just and leaves him no room just as there was none in the inn.
