Humanity is a Mixed Bag
While reading through the first couple of chapters in Paradise Lost I kept noticing how relatable Satan was as a character. We discussed this quite a bit in class so I kept this in mind as I continued. Once I reached chapters 3 and 4 and saw that God and Jesus were made to be quite stiff I began to think, why would Milton do this? I began to question this even further when Adam and Eve were made even more stiff. Now this may be a leap, but I am going to make an assumption and say that Milton did not do this unintentionally. I believe Milton intended for us to infer that humanity is a mixture of both God and Satan's image. Yes, humanity was MADE in god's image, but the impact that Satan has on humanity forever changes it. Before Satan there was no sin. You could even argue that sin is the one thing god didn't make. It is Satan's sins that cause him turmoil and it is his turmoil which makes him relatable. This is why God, Jesus, Adam, and Eve all feel so lifeless. They are pure and innocent, and we are not. I wonder if when Adam and Eve finally do sin, if this will change them in anyway. I think it must. Otherwise, I don't see why Milton would write them like this.
