God's gift of Free Will
“We freely serve because we freely love” is from lines thirty-eight and thirty-nine in book five of Paradise Lost. This line means so much to me personally and expresses why we as humans serve God. Because God gave us free will we have the choice of whether or not to serve him, but, because of the freedom whenever we do choose to serve God it means all that much more to him. For what would love be worth if it was forced? God wants us to love him freely. By giving us a choice we are responsible for our own actions and decisions. We are at no one's fault but our own if we fail in doing the right thing. God hopes to guide us on the right path by loving and forgiving us always. Just as he gave us the Bible and his only son Jesus, he sent down the angel Raphael to Adam and Eve to remind them to stay faithful and obedient to God. Even though Adam and Eve failed in obeying him and fell into temptation with Satan, just as we do at times, God still chooses to forgive them, just as he loves and forgives us.

Sometimes I really struggle with the thought of free will. Don't get me wrong, I love it. I agree with you, if God didn't give us free will then we wouldn't really love him the way that we do with free will. We would really just be his servants and not in a good way. But sometimes, I struggle with the idea because we do have the choice not to choose God. We can choose our own way. But then I remember life is so much harder if I do it on my own.... I get stuck in this circle of wondering about free will but then loving it at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree. God's gift to us through free will means so many powerful things. He actively pursues us, even in our darkest times, and wants us to love Him above all else. He doesn't us to be mind-controlled slaves, but rather think for ourselves, and there's some beauty in that. Just the fact that he knew that Man would fall to ruin but still gave us our own free will says a lot about how much He wants us to live for Him and be apart of our lives.
ReplyDeleteThe beauty of free will is undeniable and is seen quite a lot in this epic. It is also interesting to me how not only freewill is emphasized but mercy. God could completely wipe out all of Satan's army with ease. But he does not. This to me also shows why we should love god. He could have any way with us, but he chooses to even allow us to defy him.
