Two Falls
So I found it particularly interesting that in line 493 of book 5 the angel Rafael tells Adam that if he was to obey and love God, not seeking more than is given and be satisfied with what he has then he may one day transcend to the level of the angels. I find it interesting that Milton is presenting here that angels are higher than humans. Now certainly before man’s fall, they are higher in awareness and knowledge, but the concept that obedience to God would result almost in promotion seems almost captivating. I also feel as though this statement from him almost places the question in Adam’s mind; is that what I really want? We can draw similarities and differences from the fall of man to the fall of Satan. One glaring difference is that man was directly deceived by Satan, while Satan was deceived by his own greed and selfish desire. Looking at both situations however, we can analyze that both parties were not satisfied with their current situation, or “food” as discussed in class today. Only one party received the chance of grace, while the other received punishment for eternity. Just some of what I found.
