Get Knowledge Faust

My favorite moment from this week's reading comes from the conversation Faust has with Wagner after the spirit has just left Faust. It's first opened with a jest from Faust towards Wagner with his preacher/actor joke, and then they begin a discussion on knowledge, and whether or not it should be pursued as highly as it is. One of my favorite lines was, "Clear thinking and some honesty need little art for their delivery. Once you speak in earnest, must you still hunt for words?" Wagner later replies,"Excuse me, but it gives the greatest satisfaction... to see how wise men thought before our days." We now know Faust's opinion on the pursuit of "studying philosophy... law as well as medicine... [and] theology." After doing this, he feels more imprisoned than free, which is why he turns to spirits to free his heart. Wagner states,"but what of the world? the human heart and intellect? one tries so hard to gain some knowledge!" It just comes to show how differently Faust and Wagner view knowledge and the study of what is man knows. As get further along in the reading, we see how Faust maintains this belief, that the realm of spirits is more worthy of pursuit than foolish world knowledge.

  1. Faust even goes so far as to speak of knowledge in the spiritual realm as pointless as well in his rants, just an interesting note.
