Poetry For Dummies

"I have said that Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility: the emotion is contemplated till by a species of reaction the tranquility gradually disappears, and an emotion, kindred to that which was before the subject of contemplation, is gradually produced, and does itself actually exist in the mind." This specific excerpt of Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads (which, by the way, I am so happy was added to the readings) describes the process of creation, of inspirational thought behind poetry in Wordsworth's mind. I can relate so deeply, AND I'M TALKING DEEPLY, when Wordsworth describes Poetry as the spontaneous overflow of feelings. Almost every song I've ever written was first inspired by an event or story that gave me a desire to release my emotion through creation. It is almost never planned, almost always a spur of the moment. You can feel this passion and emotion within his poems and prose! While in the process of creation, I always find myself in a period of reflection on what I feel before it becomes an idea in my mind, just as he states above. I just loved how he highlighted his creation process, and at the end of the writing he wrote something like "poetry will be read 100 times, and the prose once." And as artist, it is our duty to make people come back to what they've experienced in our creation.

  1. I can relate to you relating to Wordsworth's haha! All joking aside, in the song writing process, considering I'm more of an instrumental artist recently, the songs that are written, though without words, can still portray a beautiful meaning.

  2. I'm so glad you addressed your music with poetry here. Just as pure poetry speaks to many, music in its original raw inspiration speaks to just as many because of this emotion. I love the different types of people in this class that each bring so much perspective and different viewpoints on matters.
