Okay then...

So, this is probably the point but Faust really disgusted me. I mean, it's about a man that makes a deal with the devil but still. This sexualization of a 14 year old girl by a man who looks young but we all know is really old is just nasty on so many levels. I do think it's funny how Mephistopheles starts to get annoyed with Faust and makes fun of him... "Professor Know-It-All"(2633)... "What good is easy consummation?" (2647)..."A taste of it is well and good / but then come on, try something new!"(3253-4). In attaining anything he could ever desire, even a youthful body, Faust has become more human. By this I mean that the man who once thought himself lofty as a God now cares only about physical pleasures; he has given up on and moved away from enlightenment.

I commented on Phillip and Darby's posts.

  1. Faust's character arc is interesting, isn't it? Instead of our "hero" becoming better throughout the story, we see him actually getting worse, and becoming more human - driven by desire. I loved how Mephistopheles straight up called him out in that one part. It was pretty hilarious.
