The Voice
Who is the voice at the end of "The Dungeon." I at first read it as an angel, but then as Margaret/Gretchen... Why would Goethe not give an identity to this voice? If it be that of a higher power, then it is asserted that Margaret, in her delusory state, is at least saved by submitting to punishment/ admitting and regretting her faults. BUT, why then would the voice cry out "Heinrich" to Faust? On the other hand, why would Margaret cry out "Is saved", when she had just submitted to wrath? Perhaps it is both, since there is a voice from above and within, but regardless of theories, why did Goethe not identify the voice...?
P.S. I commented on Sophia and Darby's posts.

Maybe he was asking himself what the voice was. This is a random thought but who knows what this could signify in Goethe's life at the moment. Considering this took so long for him to write, we could be seeing a writing from a different person almost.
ReplyDeleteIf it's an angel, he could be crying "Heinrich!" because Faust is running off with Satan. If I were a heavenly messenger and you were roomies with the Prince of Darkness, I'd try to get your attention.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, if it were Margaret, she could be shouting "Is saved!" after realizing that yes, she's saved. I'm pretty sure when we die we'll know right away whether we're in eternal torment or eternal bliss. If I had the opportunity to comfort the loved one mourning me, "Don't worry, I'm saved," and simultaneously rub in Satan's face "HAH! I'm SAVED!" I'd take it.
Now, does this get us anywhere as far as identifying the voice? …Okay, so not really. It could be one or the other.
Ah, yes, I noticed this too when I finished reading. Perhaps the Voice signifies a time in Goethe's life, or he intentionally left it vague so that these discussions could still be happening today. I see it as a voice from Heaven, saving Margaret, while also crying out for Faust to return back on the right path. This may or may not be right, but it's the easiest to understand in my mind. And who knows, maybe when we take a look at Part 2, we'll find out!
