Goodman and "The VVitch"
Maybe it's Hawthorne's colonial New England setting, or the fact that the story deals with witchcraft as a sin, but I got massive vibes from that 2016 movie The VVitch. Coincidentally, both stories as about a Christian family being plagued by the presence of the Devil in their village/farm. It's quite an unnerving movie, and I wouldn't watch it if you're not okay with witchcraft being put on screen, but it has a very similar tone to this story. However, both end on very different notes, what with the film ending with the the girl protagonist converting to witchcraft and Goodman's vision inspiring him to preach more to the community and drive out the evil. I think this story, while muddied by the obvious language barrier, has a very good message, and leaves you feeling really sorry for Faith while also rooting for Goodman. There's no doubt in my mind that Robert Eggers (director of the film) took inspiration from Hawthorne's stories and Miller's The Crucible when making it. If you saw the movie (which I highly doubt you have), what do you think? Is this a valid comparison?
EDIT: I commented on Zelda's and Will's posts.
Hawthorne's writings inspired many upon many movies. It wouldn't surprise me if he inspired those as well. Also keep in mind though that Hawthorne wasn't an original when it came to this sort of plot line. He copied other people's ideas and developed them just like some of the more modern poets/writers have done. "There's nothing new under the sun" and whatnot ;)
