Hawthorne Hates Hypocrisy
One recurring theme I continue to find over and over again is hypocrisy, or even just stated as being religious but asking true faith. These people who are portrayed as pious and of high character are actually in dealings with the devil himself! An excerpt from the reading very clearly and meaningful displays this:
"That old woman taught me my catechism," said the young man; and there was a world of meaning in this simple comment.
I think that Hawthorne is using this writing to highlight hypocrisy within the church and how those "leaders" within it are often different animals behind the closed doors of their private lives. This should be a call to all of us who claim to be Christians to live a life of transparency and holiness, of true character and of real faith.
