Young Goodman Brown: A Damnation to Himself

Dream or reality, Goodman Brown is entirely at fault for his soul. First of all, he entered the forest against his wife's wishes and against his own conscience. He had to justify himself for going to this meeting and make promises that he would do better in the future. Listen dude, if you want to do better in the future, you start with the present. Secondly, he had plenty of opportunities to turn around. He continually complained about how tired he was, and his travelling companion never forced him to continue. He went of his own free will. Third, common sense should have told him get out of there as soon as weird stuff started happening. The supernatural realm is a scary place, which is why demon possession movies scare us so bad. We can't control demons without the help of God, which brings me to my fourth point. I understand that everyone goes through a period of doubt with their faith and hits a few ruts in their relationship with God, but never once did this man turn to God for help. He prayed once in the entire story, and even then he was interrupted before he started. Finally, he chose to live the rest of his life in doubt and paranoia. He lived long enough to have children and grandchildren, but did not turn to God in his long life. Even if his entire town was full of Satan worshipers, he could have moved to a different town or attended church somewhere else. I have no sympathy for him. It's a shame that he went to Hell, but there are a lot of things he could have done to avoid this.

P.S. I commented on Olivia and Natalie's posts.

  1. This shook me deep. I think this is referring to removing the plank from your own eye before point out your brother's. I hadn't thought of his own lack of turning to God in the entire story. I had sympathy for him to begin with, but I have since reconsidered. Great thoughts as always.

  2. I agree with you Sophia. I think that Brown did this to himself. Yes everyone is tempted by the devil, and yes people believe the lies that he feeds to them. But those with strong faith or those who know they cannot live in the world on their own, find their out of it solely on the grace and mercy of the Lord. Brown believed that he could save himself and that is why he turned to the devil.
