A Lion, No tiger, and a Bear Oh My!

Now I actually have to say I did like The Bear. Well what I could get out of it really. At the beginning I was definitely thinking what in the heck am I reading? As I went on I really just picked up on the fact it was a hunting story with a little boy. Now, as far as this having some underlying meaning to this I really have no clue. I think what caused me to like the story so much is because I have experience with hunting and have heard plenty of stories from days past about my grandfather.

This bear is what has me messed up though. It gives the story suspense which I enjoy especially when the bear's presence is felt not seen, but as I read I do feel a little sad. The setting of the story is not what I typically expect out of a hunting trip, or I am just really doing it wrong. At the end of chapter 1 it really bothered me how he just saw the bear and it disappeared that was it. I was really hoping for a little more honestly.

At the beginning of chapter 2 I liked how he stated how much he knew about the woods and that he knew so much it actually became his Alma mater. Now my favorite part is when he takes off after the little dog because it will not quit barking at the bear. It was quite intense, but it had me thinking about how I probably would have done the same thing for my dog who thinks she is the baddest two and a half pound animal out there. I really became sad about the the colt and that the Old Ben killed it, but what I found most interesting was how Major de Spain became disappointed in the bear for breaking the rules. I still have to say i did not get what the boy realized in Sam's face about what killed the colt was unless it was Sam himself? Now what confused me the most was Lion I would come across it and think what is this it is the woods? But once I found out it was the dog the story started to make a little more sense. What I did come to realize is how much I like Lion because for one, I love big dogs and two he is just tough and seems to be able to take down the bear which sounds pretty awesome if he can do that.

I commented on Sophia's and Noah's post.

  1. I feel like Sam says nothing because he realizes Ben knows his time has come. It's almost like Ben is telling them he is ready to die.

  2. I believe the underlying meaning is just showing different forms courage takes, within man, boy, and beast.
