A "Second Coming" or a realization of "The Waste Land" before us??
Reading through both "The Waste Land" and "Second Coming", I almost thought to myself that "Second Coming" could be a preface to "The Wasteland". It seems throughout "Second Coming", Yeats is warning the reader of a foreboding evil and force that will be rearing its ugly head soon. Seeing as this poem was written right after WW1, Yeats' view might be that this cycle of war and death is not to end soon, and that we are bringing this on ourselves. "The Waste Land" showed a picture of what I would say is the result of those who did not heed Yeats' words. A land lacking resources like water, food, and this resulting in the carrion being strewn about the land. A real disaster piece that we humans have created.

I completely agree. It wouldn't be the first time humanity has fallen due to not listening to advice of others in literature, and it's not too unlikely it could happen in reality.
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing! It was cool to re-read The Wasteland in the light of The Second Coming. I thought Yeats' poem gave good context to Eliot's work, even though they aren't related.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that the Second Coming is like a preface is sort of funny because both seem to stem from lack of religion and the idea of "warning comes before destruction" is biblical.
