Reverence to The Bear

It seems like early on in The Bear I noticed that the hunters held a reverence for what they hunted and killed. It seemed that they are also set apart in a way from society, almost bound to very forest they hunt in. Reading more into the story, the way that the Bear is portrayed seems almost like it blurs the lines of real existence and just being part of the woods. When it disappeared into the woods almost without seamlessly moving made me wonder if the Bear really does hold a great allegorical meaning that I'm missing. Knowing that he dies (Thanks Sophia haha), I guess we will have to see where my train thought takes me. I would love to know why Old Ben is so important to them, and perhaps the allegorical meaning behind him is why the hunters are chasing him?? Maybe they are part of the fulfillment of a greater hidden meaning?? Food in class tomorrow, heck yeah.

P.S. I commented on Sophia's and Will's posts!

  1. Old Ben was important because the hunters could not kill Old Ben in the first place. Old Ben has killed multiple of the hunters' hounds and is rarely seen. It was only after they acquired the assistance of the forest, through Lion, that they were able to track, slow, and damage Old Ben in the first place. Old Ben made a name for himself by forming his presence as an unkillable killing machine...bear...thing. The writing even states that the forest is unknown, and I personally believe the allegorical meaning of Old Ben and his (assumed) inevitable death represents man's overcoming fear of nature and the wilderness.

  2. I feel as though old ben could possibly be their humanity that they are chasing, the thing that they can never seem to attain and until they kill it they will be stuck in this lifeless, expressionless task of hunting. Maybe I am reading to much into it, but I also was thinking about the significance and possibly symbolism that the bear brings to the table.
