Mother, Mother, Where Art Thou?
As with most other debates on the topic I see that Copelston kind of had the upperhand. Close to the end, in not so many words, he says that if God does not exist then this entire debate is pointless.
Of course there are necessary things in the world needed for more to be created, but all of those things are contingent on an origin point. According to the First Law of Thermodynamics "Energy cannot be created nor destroyed." Simply put there has to be an origin which is necessary for energy to form matter, the universe and the world, and all living creatures. This is the premise of the teleological argument in purest form. Our debaters delve into the example of a child coming from a mother.
Russell does not admit that a necessary being exists, which ultimately puts him at a disadvantage in this argument. By having the presupposition that nothing is necessary he has effectively lost any footing on which to stand, because as I mentioned before, physics itself declares that there is an origin from which everything is created. Without the "necessary" energy, nothing "contingent" can come to fruition.
