The Start To A Very Long Conversation
This parable really asked the questions I've heard people like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens. These were the questions, in particular, of the root of evil and their dissatisfaction with the answers they have been given. "God loves us like a Father loves his children" is quoted once or twice in the parable, and the response of Flew saying that he can be sure of the non-existence of God, reminds me of a common thing atheists go after. Especially following the Florida shooting, when people attack the cliches, and yes, it is kinda cliche, such as "thoughts and prayers"and things like that. They wish to attack Christians and God with questions, demanding answers that satisfies them. Flew reminds me of such a skeptic, who, before asking the question knew their own answer and was not willing to consider changing their mind, just wishes to "put Christians in their place" and talk down to them. We've all been hurt and seen hardship, and it's only by the grace of God that I can say that He is always with me no matter what. Flew seems like one who's been hurt and wishes to "save" people from God. It's an interesting idea. Maybe not a good one, but an idea.

It's the exact situations like the Florida shooting that trigger that outspoken atheists and Christian nay-sayers. However, they get riled up about these events because "an astounding 18 mass shootings have already happen in 2018 in the U.S. so far" is all that's propagated to them. So, my rebuttal to this situation is to inform them of the much more intense and far more numerous events of persecution that occur all around the world and not just in our own backyard. Yes, it's devastating that 17 young adults lost their lives 5 days ago, but is it not unfortunate that Christians, and people that deny Islam in general, are being held at gunshot and given a yes-or-no question to determine if their life should be taken from them or not? Of course it is, but because so many people don't bother researching beyond what Sally Sue shared on FaceSpace or SnapGram that they spout oblivious rage comments before knowing of worse matters that should concern them more.
