Hell: A Nudist Community for Murderers

OKAY… where should I begin? The literal bloodbath? Satan’s midnight ball? The witches? The fact that EVERY WOMAN IS ALMOST ALWAYS COMPLETELY NAKED!?!?! Sorry for the all-caps screaming, I would really like to know what the importance of everyone being naked is and what it adds to the plot line.

Anyways, I would like to start with the colors and flowers that decorate the grand ballroom of Satan’s midnight ball. When Margarita is first walking through the ballroom, she describes the decorations of the place, and in the description, she briefly mentions all these different kinds of flowers covering the walls. What I thought was interesting was that on one wall there were tulips and the walls were yellow, and the other the wall was filled with red and pink roses. If you remember the love story of the Master and Margarita, Margarita was first carrying yellow flowers when she and the Master met. The Master told her that he hated the flowers, and upon that comment, she threw them away. However, when they were together in the apartment and their love was flourishing, (get it? Flourishing, because of the flowers? Ok I’ll stop) the couple kept red roses on the kitchen table. I do not know if this is a very important or significant detail, I just thought it was interesting and I wanted to point it out. With so much to talk about I found it necessary to just pick one thing and focus on it.

Side note: If anyone has the recipe for Azazello’s cream and would like to share it with me that would be great. The beauty industry is a really booming market at this moment and I would like to get in on the ground floor. I feel like this is a great business opportunity, and I am interested in starting up a company focused on this revolutionary anti-aging product. So, if you know the recipe hit me up because I am pretty sure that right now only the devil knows it.   ;)

Joke of the week: What is the appropriate time to host a witches gathering? When pigs fly!!!

I commented on Will and Sophia's!

  1. As for the nakedness, I think it is meant to highlight the witches' shamelessness and embracing of evil. I hadn't noticed the part about the flowers matching the flowers they had in their apartment. I kind of skimmed over that part. And if I told you about the cream, I would have to either turn you into a pig or a vampire. Your choice.

  2. I want to say the nakedness is a reference to the lack of shame. They have no sense in needing to cover themselves, because they are witches. Kind of like older times I guess when people couldn't really show their ankles, y'know?

  3. I'm not gonna lie, I was laughing my butt off when Margarita went crazy an just hopped onto the broom and flew off into the night to eventually be breaking into houses. Girls has absolutely lost it, and I don really know what's gonna happen when her and the Master are together, they've both got their issues.

  4. (I have a secret stash of Azazello's cream in my closet, so if you want some give me the code: "bingo bango rango tango" at precisely 10:30am. I'll pass you some.)

The flowers probably hold the symbolic meaning that you're referring to, but I personally just saw it as a "false sense of security" type of deal. Satan likes to play with emotions and the fleshly desires, so most rational people would look at the flowers and feel "love" or "peace." I think anywhere beyond that you'd be stretching the point of the scene. Maybe Satan just likes yellow walls and red and pink roses...don't judge him, lest ye be judged.

I think Mikhail just wanted to subsidize his own desires, if I'm being honest... (I accept the hit in the head I may get for this comment.)

  5. I, too, was puzzled at the significance of women always, always being naked. Like, it's literally just the women that are naked. The men are fully clothed. All I could think about upon reading these details was the contrast of the first shameless and innocent couple to gallivant in nakedness (Adam and Eve) and the glory of the Lord. This nakedness, however, found in the Devil's presence, is not shameless or innocent in anyway, but distorted and untasteful. Significance here? I might think so, but I still have not discovered Bulgakov's point. We will see.

  6. Yeah I do not understand why there has to be someone naked. Maybe the lack of modesty? I am not sure but its just really messed up to me. I really like this cream stuff too because I really need to use it on my eyebrows but I do not want the side effects that Margarita had with it. I do like your note of the flowers thought but it really bothers me how they all shrivel up and die but it is Satan we are talking about here and everyone is dead so what is new?
