The Master and Margarita: Something is Rotten in the State of... Moscow?

Satan's ball is exactly how I picture crazy frat parties. The music is way too loud, people are packed together way too tight, and at least one person leaves with a hickey. In short, it is exhausting and uncomfortable. I didn't see the point of the ball, and I didn't know what the holiday was either. If someone can tell me, please do.

I have to say that Margarita confuses me greatly. At first, I had the impression that she was a normal, sweet woman who had an odd and slightly unhealthy obsession with her former lover's book. As it turns out, she is an absolutely crazy person who would literally do anything to see Master again. Is this true love? I don't think so. I apologize to my hypothetical, future boyfriend, but I am not turning into an evil, crazy, naked witch just to see you again. She has to be truly desperate to ask for the help of the demons, especially after they forced her to be the hostess of that ball. Even when she did see him again, it was a pretty unsatisfying reaction. I don't like Margarita.

I was interested in the globe Woland kept studying. What I couldn't help but wonder was why he cared so much about wrecking the lives of the people connected to the theater when he clearly has other things to worry about. What is it about this situation that requires his direct attention? I've only read up to page 311, so no spoilers in the comments, please!

P.S. I commented on Will and Zelda's posts.

  1. I agree, Margarita has certainly turned into a very crazy woman. I did not think it could get much worse when all of a sudden she flew out of her window naked riding on a broomstick. Now that she and the Master have finally been reunited I am interested to see what happens. A crazy naked woman and a man suffering from night terrors, what could possibly go wrong?

  2. I think the point of the ball was just for them to have fun, I don't think a specific holiday celebration was in play. And yeah, Margarita was head over heels for the Master in the worse way possible.

  3. Margarita stikes me as a woman who is so unhappy (you could argue a little too unhappy) that she checked out years ago and just wishes to be back with the Master. I feel like anything that gives her a feeling of freedom, which would lead to being with the Master, she will jump at, or jump on and fly off into the night naked on.....

  4. Maragrita reminds me of the time Margaret murdered her baby and went half-crazy in jail thanks to her relationship with Faust… It also reminds me of Milton’s account of Adam eating the fruit and damning himself just to make sure he wouldn’t be separated from his beloved Eve. Satan sure does like playing with people through romance, doesn’t he?
